The FIRO-B*:

How What You Want from People Shapes Your Leadership Style

Carol Kallendorf, Ph.D.

"My style as team leader wasn't getting results, but I didn't know what to do."

This is what Lucy,  one of my clients told me, and she wasn't the first.

We helped Lucy Become an Outstanding Team Leader

Lucy was at her wits end.   She was a well-educated person, experienced in her industry, and an outstanding performer.

But she wasn't on her team's wave length.  And they were close to mutiny.

FIRO-B helped her to understand.  Lucy, as many managers, had a high need for Expressed Control.  Her managers, also educated and high performers, needed a lot of space to accomplish their projects.

At the same time, Lucy's Expressed Inclusion scores were very low.  She knew where the project was going and it wasn't that she was secretive.  She just didn't want to take the time to do a lot of briefings.

But her Wanted Inclusion scores were very high and she felt slighted when her peopled didn't include her in their process.  Her High Expressed Control scores drove her to being very aggressive when she thought some aspect of the project was slipping away.

We helped Lucy understand that what she communicated to others was what she would never obtain with her present behaviors.  This began a new, happier and more successful era for Lucy.

The FIRO-B™ (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior™) shows, more clearly than any other assessment, how our behavior impacts others.   Nothing affects our ability to manage more, as well as our general ability to live a happy life, than how we impact others and how they impact us.  This can be measured--and, if we wish to do so, changed.  The FIRO-B tells us how.

In the course of living, each one of us learns to adapt to the people around us--sometimes productively and sometimes less productively.  This leads us to create a pattern of interacting with others that is often unconscious.  Sometimes it works well and gets us the outcomes we want, and sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes the set of behaviors we use sends out a very different message than we wish to send.  We may want people to get close to us, but we may be signaling that we want them to leave us alone.  And sometimes we send out double signals that leave people even more confused.

The theory behind the FIRO-B™ is based on three categories of human interaction:

  • Inclusion and teams, which has to do with forming new relationships and associating with people, and determines the extent of contact and prominence that a person needs

  • Control and power, which has to do with decision-making, influence, and persuasion among people, and determines the degree of power or dominance that a person seeks.

  • Affection and warmth, which has to do with emotional ties and warm connections between people, and determines the degree of closeness that a person seeks.

The FIRO-B™ can provide insight into your probable compatibility with other people, as well as your individual style of interaction.  It can be used in any situation where interpersonal relationships matter, including management development, team building, leadership development, coaching and employee development.  The assessment takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Use the FIRO-B™ to:

  • Maximize the impact of your actions at work.
  • Identify options for increasing your job satisfaction and productivity.
  • Explore alternative ways to achieve your career goals.
  • Improve team effectiveness and explain team roles.
  • Identify leadership operating styles.
